The Black Watch Association

The Black Watch Association is a charity registered in Scotland (SC16423) which aims to help all those who have served in The Black Watch (and their dependants) who are in need by reason of age, ill health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. It also exists to promote comradeship and relies on an extensive network of Branches and volunteers spread across the UK to organise events which help maintain links to old comrades.

The Association was founded in 1873, but it was given its current shape and form in 1919 in the aftermath of the First World War (1914 - 18) when the founding fathers established an organisation that could help the thousands of men who had been wounded in that conflict. It has stood the test of time helping soldiers and their families in the inter- war years, during the Second World War and since 1945, the many conflicts that the British Army has been engaged in. The most recent have been Iraq and Afghanistan.

Financial assistance is given when a report, prepared by SSAFA Forces Help, indicates a genuine need. Any grant given is authorised by an experienced Welfare Committee and is then paid to SSAFA Forces Help who administer the expenditure.

There is also a Holiday Scheme for widows of Black Watch servicemen and Education Grants can be made to soldiers who have retired or are about to do so; this type of grant can, in some cases, be made to their children. Funds to enable the Association to carry out its charitable activities are obtained through our investments and donations, made primarily through the Gift Aid Scheme. If you wish to know more about how to make a donation then go to the donations tab or else use the simple link at the top of this page.

The Association is based at Balhousie Castle in Perth, which is the spiritual home of The Black Watch.
