Join us to celebrate Festival of Museums with our Jacobite and Redcoats: The Battle for the Highlands Event

Travel back in time to the 18th century and discover the origins of Scotland’s oldest Highland Regiment, The Black Watch. Meet courageous Jacobites and stern government redcoats as they fight for control of the Highlands. Find out how to fire a musket, wield a broadsword and take part in a heroic Highland charge. Get creative by making your own musket, basket-hilted broadsword and shield. Afterwards explore the galleries with our adventurous Highlander trail and get hands on with some fascinating artefacts from the Museum’s unique collections.
Jacobite and Redcoat Review | 11.00am
Watch the Jacobites and Redcoats gather for inspection as their Officer checks equipment and issues orders.
The Skirmish |12.00pm, 2.30pm
Gather in the grounds for a narrated slow motion demonstration of a Highland charge.
Meet the Jacobites and Redcoats | 1.00pm
Meet the soldiers as they talk about their uniform, equipment and perform a sword fighting demonstration.
Redcoat Drill | 2.00pm
Observe the Redcoats as they run through loading, firing and bayonet drills.
Closing Display | 3.30pm
Join the men as they remember those who fell in battle and listen to a lament by a Jacobite piper.
Highlander Highlight Tours | 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm
Explore the galleries and discover the historical links between The Black Watch, Jacobites and Redcoats.
